Indiana trooper struck by vehicle at marathon race

COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) — An Indiana State Trooper was struck early this morning while he was trying to direct traffic for the Mill Race Marathon in Columbus.

Authorities say the incident occurred shortly after 8:00 a.m. Saturday when Sherry S. Waggoner was partially blinded by the sun and attempted to turn onto Mapleton Street. That’s where she struck First Sergeant Perry Hewitt, a 36-year veteran of the ISP.

Sergeant Hewitt suffered injuries to his lower body as a result of the collision, and would be later transported to Columbus Regional Hospital.

Hewitt has been treated and released for his injuries.
