Anderson PD arrest man in Sunday carjacking

ANDERSON, Ind. (WISH) – Police in Anderson have arrested one for the Sunday evening carjacking an SUV with an 81-year-old woman inside.

According to the Anderson Police Department, 34-year-old Robert Rickard III after forcibly taking a 2015 Honday CRV from a family of three in Anderson.

Police said the incident happened in the intersection of 59th Street and Scatterfield Road Sunday evening. The suspect reportedly walked up to the vehicle, grabbed the driver’s door exterior handle and told the driver to get out. A second passenger in the vehicle also managed to escape the vehicle. However, the man took the vehicle speeding away with an 81-year-old woman still in the passenger seat.

Police said the driver began heading south on I-69 and entered Hamilton County where a vehicle pursuit ensued. The Rickard was eventually apprehended near 56th Street and Shadeland Avenue in Indianapolis.

None of three passengers were injured in the incident.

Rickard faces preliminary charges of robbery and auto theft.

Residents in Anderson did not appear shocked after learning about the carjacking; however, it appears residents say they will remain watchful when people walk up to their vehicle.

” Basically I will have my door locked and have my windows down to see what the person is wanting,” said Resident Gregory Marshall.
