Saturday evening chase spans two counties, suspect’s vehicle catches fire

BOONE COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – The suspect’s vehicle in a Saturday evening chase the spanned two counties caught fire.

According to the Boone County Sherrif’s Office, the chase began as a traffic stop for a possible OWI in Montgomery County around 9 p.m. Saturday evening. The driver of the Mercury Mountaineer refused to pull over and a chase ensured. Both Indiana State Police and Crawfordsville police were involved in the chase at that time.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office then informed Boone County authorities they involved in a pursuit and that the vehicle was headed toward Boone County, traveling eastbound on I-74.

The vehicle took the State Road 75 exit and continued traveling north. The Mountaineer then turned onto County Road 500 West, driving through a field the vehicle then struck a guide wire to a utility poll, according to authorities.

Boone County Sheriff’s deputies, listening to radio traffic of the pursuit, set up stop sticks at Budd Road and 500 West. As the suspect began approaching the sticks, the vehicle swerved to the left and hit a Boone County Sheriff’s vehicle.  The collision sent the suspect’s vehicle into a nearby field and turned over.

The deputy, not being in the car at the time of the collision, was not injured.  Authorities were able to successfully get of the driver of the Mercury Mountaineer, 19-year-old James McCue.

McCue was transported to the hospital for a cut to the head, broken teeth, abdominal pain and cuts and bruises to the legs.
