Purdue football player arrested on battery charges

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – A Purdue University football player is behind bars Wednesday and now faces a battery charge.

Purdue sophomore offensive lineman Martesse Patterson, from Columbus, Ohio, was arrested Wednesday morning for a battery incident that occurred Sept. 7, according to court documents.

Following an investigation by West Lafayette police, prosecutors charged Patterson Wednesday with battery resulting in serious bodily injury.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Patterson went to his roommate’s bedroom and asked to borrow some property from his roommate, who said he was not allowed to borrow it. Patterson took it anyway and returned to his bedroom. When the roommate approached Patterson about getting his item back, court documents state Patterson punched his roommate in the face.

The victim sought treatment in Indianapolis and suffered a broken jaw requiring surgery and a two-day hospital stay. Medical records state the victim suffered a displaced fracture of the left mandible and a nondisplaced fracture of the right mandible.

More than one week after the incident, West Lafayette police spoke with Patterson who admitted to taking his roommate’s property and striking him.

A no-contact order has been issued, as well as a bail set at $10,000 surety or $1,000 cash.
