Montreal passes ordinance to ban pit bulls

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – In Montreal, Canada, a controversial city ordinance passed this week, banning the new ownership of pit bulls and so-called pit bull-type dog breeds. Could similar legislation pass in central Indiana, and how would it affect current pit bull owners?

Susan Hobbs from Indianapolis Animal Care services, Lisa Hanover-Payne and AJ Johnson from Casa Del Toro stopped by 24-Hour News 8 to talk about the new ordinance.

They talked about the new ordinance and how the vote wasn’t planned until 2018, but was moved up after a woman was fatally mauled to death by a pit bull.

A similar legislation was proposed in 2009 in Indianapolis that restricts certain breeds after a woman was attacked by a pit bull and lost a leg. Other Indiana towns who have ordinances include, East Chicago, Gary, Fowler and Lake County.
