Ritz announces Indiana’s 2017 Teacher of the Year

(WISH) – The Superintendent of Public Instruction, Glenda Ritz, announced the 2017 Indiana Teacher of the Year.

Ritz announced Thursday afternoon that Jitka Nelson was named Indiana’s 2017 Teacher of the Year during a celebration at Logansport Community High School.

Nelson is a high school English language arts, development reading and English learner teacher in Logansport Community Schools. She has worked as an educator for more than 25 years.

“Today, I am honored to recognize another outstanding teacher who has dedicated her career to improving outcomes for English Learners. During her career, Nelson has demonstrated a commitment to high standards and individualized instruction that produces results for her students. It is with great pleasure that I announce that Jitka Nelson is Indiana’s 2017 Teacher of the Year,” Ritz said.

Nelson has been an instructional assistant and classroom teacher in two other counties, such as the Czech Republic and Canada. She has been a teacher at Logansport Community High School since 2006.

Some of Nelson’s career awards include:

  • 2016 Crystal Berry Award – Logansport District Teacher of the Year Award
  • 2015 Woman of Distinction Award – Alpha Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International
  • 2014 Pillar of the Logansport Community School Corporation Award
