New numbers show cost of child care in US for many parents is more than cost of in-state tuition

(WISH) – Smartphone emergency alerts are about to get a mandatory upgrade, and there are new numbers showing just how much child care costs Americans.

The FCC has voted to upgrade emergency smartphone alerts starting next year. Things like severe weather, missing children and other dangers.

The agency also voted to allow longer messages, 360 characters, up from 90 and to require wireless providers to support Spanish-language alerts.

In other business headlines, the cost of child care in the United States for many parents is more than the cost of in-state college tuition, according to a new study from the Think Tank New America, which recommends major systemic changes to help families get Affordable Child Care.

Overall, the report said College Tuition costs $9,400 per year on average, whereas the average annual cost for full-time child care for children four-years-old and younger is just shy of $9,600.
