Police in Greenwood investigating apparent hit-and-run

GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) – Police in Greenwood are investigating an apparent hit-and-run involving a truck running into a building.

According to the Greenwood Police Department, either a large truck or a semi hit a building located in the 300 block of west Main Street in Greenwood.

Police said they believe the accident happened sometime late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.

A portion of Main Street in downtown Greenwood remained closed Monday night.

The city closed the street as a safety precaution after a truck hit one of the buildings.

The city hopes to get the critical repairs done soon and get Main Street re-opened by Tuesday.

The closure happened because a truck hit the building over the weekend and the driver drove away from the scene.

“About 3 o’clock yesterday I just had a call that there was damage to the building,” VP of American Business Insurance, Derek Lacy said.

That’s how Lacy found out a truck had crashed into his office building.

“I asked if the building was still standing and it was, so I wasn’t too worried,” he said.

He might not have been too concerned, but the city took safety measures to prevent injuries.

Fire Department crews put up temporary support beams because they felt the brick structure was unstable.

“They put the support column that’s up there, the wooden support structure, to help support the lintel that holds the brick up over the window area,” Greenwood Project Manager,John Shell said.

And until it can be properly repaired, the affected portion of Main Street will be closed.

“We didn’t want brick collapsing and falling into the street and potentially damaging cars or hurting people,” Shell said, “So we made the call to close the street.”

As far as cost, the business’ insurance will most likely cover repairs because the truck driver drove off, fleeing the scene, and hasn’t been identified.

“Working in insurance, it’s so common anymore that it’s not that frustrating, almost expected,” Lacy said.

And because the building is part of the downtown facade renovation, there will be a slight delay to that storefront in particular.

But Shell said it could have been worse.

“We were about ready to put the windows in, so in some ways you could describe it, we were fortunate we weren’t that far along,” Shell said.

And Lacy said the street closure hasn’t had a major impact on his business because he’s relying on email and phone.

According to Greenwood Police, the search is on for the driver of the truck.

He or she could face charges of leaving the scene of an accident.

The city is reviewing any security cameras in the area to see if they captured the accident.

Witnesses to the incident or anyone else with information on this case is asked to contact the Greenwood Police Department at 317-882-9191.
