Thousands of fans attend final day of the Red Bull Air Race

SPEEDWAY (WISH) — Fast airplanes were a sight to see for thousands of fans attending the final day of the Red Bull Air Race in Indianapolis.

Despite the gloomy weather earlier during the day, the race went off without any problems. Fans said they enjoyed seeing their favorite pilots and airplanes up close and personal.

Spectators packed the stands at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in October to watch a different kind of race.

“It’s great, it’s great adrenaline rush, very good to see,” said Kevin James, spectator.

James said he recently moved to Indianapolis. He attended race day with his best friend Nicholas.

“I’ve been watching them for about ten years now, been fortunate enough to tell them hey they are coming to your town and we’re going to come and visit,” said Nicholas Pilipiak, visiting from Illinois.

Pillpiak and his two boys traveled to Indianapolis from the suburbs of Chicago. They watched in awe as some of the world’s best pilots raced against the clock.

“Peter is one of my favorites, he’ driving the red bull plane today and he’s a veteran and he’s one of my favorites, all-time favorite,” he said.

The pilots traveled more than 200 miles per hour from up above doing loops and turns.

“You got to be crazy driving in the airplane just waiting for them to hit a pylon,” said James.

Other people not too familiar with the race came out to watch anyway. Debra Marsh is from Danville, Indiana.

“Excitement, I’ve never been to anything like this. First time,” she said. “First time for everything.”

She attended the race with friends, who said they may become new fans.

“I’m kind of new to it. I don’t know any of the pilots or anything about any of the planes,” said a friend of Marsh’s. “But I probably will after today.”

Matthias Dolderer took home the victory at the 2016 Red Bull Air Race in Indianapolis.

The next Red Bull Air Race will be held in Las Vegas on October 15 to October 16.
