IMPD: Fight leads to deadly Broad Ripple shooting

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — On Monday afternoon, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department identified 24 year old Tre Spencer as the man who died in an early morning shooting in Broad Ripple.

The shooting happened just before 3 a.m. in an alley on the 6300 block of Guilford Avenue

IMPD says every Sunday there’s a large reggae show at the Casba nightclub. From there, they say there was some sort of altercation in the alley.

“There can’t be too much good stuff going on at that hour,” said Rob Sabatini, the public safety liaison for the Broad Ripple Village Association.

“When you don’t care about human life, it doesn’t matter where it occurs, these are things that can happen,” said Commander Chris Bailey of IMPD.

Bailey says a man walked down the alley and told a cop he’d been shot. That man hasn’t been identified yet.

“When people want to settle their disputes or deal with things with a gun, rather than talking to each or other measures, there’s no amount of police officers you can put on a corner that is going to stop someone from doing that,” said Bailey.

You may recall back in 2014, there was another shooting in the area that left seven people hurt.

Since then, IMPD spent over $60,000 on additional patrols, including bike patrols.

“That’s been a great tool for us because people on bikes can see things that other people don’t, they can get places more covertly and they’re more approachable,” said Bailey.

Ironically the shooting happened near the Broad Ripple Village Association. Since the 2014 shootings, they’ve been working with IMPD to secure the area.

Fabrice Douei owns Geek’s Seafood, Salad and Subs. Casba is across the street. Geek’s was open when the shooting happened.

“We are a little anxious about Sunday nights now because people might be scared. We’re a little anxious but we think that Broad Ripple is going to catch back,” said Douei.

“I know that we haven’t had any serious issues up here in a long time, so I think everybody’s been doing their job diligently and keep the area safe. What I tell people whether it’s safe or not safe, I still feel Broad Ripple is safe and I think it’s made large strides and I think this is sort of an isolated incident,” said Sabatini.

IMPD is also treating this as an isolated incident.

IMPD is now looking to see if any video was captured of the incident.

If you know anything you’re asked to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS (8477).
