Broad Ripple shooting victim remembered as hard-working, loving

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department detectives are scouring through evidence and witness statements with hopes of learning who is behind Monday’s fatal shooting in Broad Ripple.

It left 23-year-old Tre Spencer dead and 22-year-old Shaquille Potts hospitalized. Police said he remains in critical condition.

Police don’t have a suspect, but IMPD North District Commander Chris Bailey assured it is working diligently to get to the bottom of this case.

Meanwhile, family members of one of the victims are busy with having to plan a funeral.

“Every time you see him, he had a smile,” said Martine Spencer, Tre’s grandmother.

The smile was clear in the picture his family provided and in the minds of those who saw him in person.

Now the memories of that smile are all people have left after he died from the shooting early Monday morning.

“I wish the violence and everything would stop because they’re taking some wonderful kids’ lives that have a very, very bright future,” she said. “And (Tre) was one of them.”

Tuesday afternoon, everything appeared back to normal in the popular neighborhood with people walking down the very alley where police said Tre and Potts. Police said there was some sort of argument that occurred just minutes after closing time at the nearby club Casba.

Several blocks away, dog owners flooded the neighborhood for a community walk.

The shooting was a topic of conversation but not something that was scaring them away.

“I think that the shooting doesn’t really give a real good picture of what Broad Ripple is and what it stands for so,” said Rachel Reed of Noblesville. “I think it’s just a great place to come and visit.”

She also trusts that police will find the person responsible.

There are found several surveillance cameras near the crime scene and police say they’re all being checked with hopes of finding a suspect and justice for a grieving family.

“Tre was a beautiful, beautiful person. I watched him grow into the young man that he was,” Spencer said. “Well loved and missed and my heart is broken.”

Tre was a Pike High School graduate. His father is the school’s wrestling coach. A GoFundMe page has been set up to cover funeral expenses.
