Mother passing out flyers for leads after son was shot and killed in Mooresville

MOORESVILLE (WISH) — A Morgan County woman is pleading for help from the community after someone shot and killed her son outside his home.

It happened two weeks ago on North Gasburg Road in Mooresville

Sue Beetham told 24-Hour News 8 she spent the last two days passing out flyers to people living in Martinsville and the surrounding area.

Beetham said she comes from a small town and knows someone out there knows something about her son’s homicide.

“I would never want any mother to have to sit where I am today,” she said. “It’s heart wrenching to lay your head down at night and wake up in the morning.”

Beetham is trying to cope with the death of her son, Jacob Searcy, 28. She said she last saw him the night before the shooting.

“I never hugged him goodbye,” Beetham cried. “I don’t regret that because he’s not gone to me, he’s not gone.”

She described her son as loving and caring, someone who would go above and beyond to help others.

“He was a beautiful person, he loved and breathed for life and made everyone happy. They came first, way before Jacob did,” Beetham said.

Beetham said her son was living with his 82-year-old grandpa as a caregiver. The elderly man heard a gunshot during the early morning of September 21st.

“He said he came out the front and yelled for Jacob. He took the flash light in the front and couldn’t find him,” Beetham said. “He went to the side yard and saw Jacob laying back there.”

Beetham said her son was shot in the head. She said her dad went to get help.

“He went back in the house and got the blanket off his bed and he went back and covered Jacob up and then he went next door and knocked on the neighbor’s door and said could you please call 911 Jacob had been shot,” she said.

The Morgan County Major Crime Task Force is still investigating and has not released any information on a potential motive or suspect.

“Jacob’s body is still under 100% investigation,” she said. “He still has not been released for closure and the memorial part of all of this tragedy.”

While the family waits for answers, Beetham said she is not giving up and is praying for anyone with information to do the right thing.

“I have to push forward with every breath I have too,” she said. “I have God on one side of me and Jacob on the other and they’re holding me up.”

Beetham said her family and close friends will continue to pass out flyers.
