INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Five suspects are in custody, according to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officials, after an attempted robbery of a Burger King on the west side.

The incident happened just before 9 p.m. Wednesday in the 5100 block of West Washington Street.

Dispatch released a description of the suspects and said they were attempting to rob the restaurant. Police said officers responding to the scene were familiar with the description of the suspects because they same description had been listed in the previous robberies the last few nights.

When police arrived on scene, they found several employees and customers inside the business at the same time of the attempted robbery. Police said one of the customers was armed and tried to stop the three suspects from robbing the restaurant, which is when shots were exchanged.

The suspects ran out of the restaurant and left in a vehicle. Shortly after, the vehicle was stopped by officers at a traffic stop who saw a vehicle matching the description from multiple Tuesday night robberies.

There were five people inside the vehicle, two adults and three juveniles. The two adults were brought to the Arrestee Processing Center and the three juveniles were transported to Juvenile Detention.

There were no injuries from the incident.

According to IMPD Deputy Chief Valerie Cunningham, the suspects were later located during a traffic stop around 9:20 p.m. initiated by an officer that saw a vehicle matching the description from multiple Tuesday night robberies.

The suspects are believed to be connected with nine robberies that have occurred in Marion and Hendricks Counties in the past 72 hours.
