Pence defends Trump at Gettysburg rally

GETTYSBURG, Pa. (WISH) – Governor Mike Pence took his bus tour to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Thursday where he tried to clarify remarks that Donald Trump made about members of the military who commit suicide.

His day started with a series of cable TV interviews where Pence repeatedly defended Trump by saying that he doesn’t always choose his words properly. It’s part of the clean up role that Pence has taken on.

At Gettysburg, he took a tour of the site where one of the most famous battles in the Civil War was fought before he conducted a rally.

During that rally he tried to explain what Donald Trump meant when he suggested that members of the military who commit suicide aren’t strong enough.

“Despite the fact that the other side tried to play political games with it,” he said, “Donald Trump the other day spoke from his heart about the need for us in this country to provide more effective mental health treatment for our returning war fighters.  We’re gonna make it happen.”

At one point two protesters disrupted the rally for more than a minute before being ejected.

When order was restored a relaxed Mike Pence said, “I feel right at home here.”
