Man airlifted after fiery Bartholomew County crash

BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — One man was airlifted with injuries and another was arrested for a warrant after their vehicle crashed and burst into flames Wednesday in Bartholomew County.

Lazaro Hernandez-Moheno of Columbus was found walking in a cornfield as emergency crews responded to a single-vehicle crash at County Road 340 E. south of County Road 650 S. around 6:45 p.m, according to the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office.

He told deputies that he and 35-year-old Juan Mendez of Columbus were driving north on County Road 340 E. when the vehicle left the road, rolled several times and burst into flames. Mendez was found nearby.

Both Hernandez-Moheno and Mendez escaped the vehicle before it started to burn.

Mendez was airlifted to IU Health Methodist Hospital in unknown condition.

Hernandez-Moheno was uninjured, but he was arrested on an outstanding Bartholomew County warrant. He was taken to the Bartholomew County Jail.
