Matthew causing travel headaches in central Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Hurricane Matthew is causing headaches and changing travel plans right here in central Indiana.

The Indianapolis International Airport message boards listed five cancelled flights Friday. Every one of those flights was headed to either Georgia or Florida.

A packed bag still sits on Nick Schwab’s kitchen floor and maps of Disney World are scattered across the counter.

But the Schwabs aren’t going to Orlando.

“It’s disappointing just for the fact we’ve been looking forward to it for so long then we find out 48 hours before that the whole thing’s going to fall apart,” Nick Schwab said.

One thousand miles from his Greenwood home, Hurricane Matthew ripped through Florida.

Southwest Airlines texted Schwab Thursday to tell him his flight’s cancelled.

Schwab rescheduled the trip against his five-year-old’s wishes.

“This morning, he said, ‘We’re going to Disney World’ and kind of threw a little fit,” Schwab said.

Kenny Lee’s toddler is already in Orlando.

That’s why Lee is keeping an eye on the news and calling his family throughout the day. Lee left his Orlando home early to avoid the storm for a funeral in Indianapolis.

He said a tree fell on a power line outside his home but the power is still on.

“Everything is pretty good right now but you just kind of think about what could happen and whether you did enough to make sure everything is OK,” Lee said.

Lee plans to fly back Monday.

Schwab, on the other hand, said Southwest and Disney both let him change the trip to March with no extra fees. His five-year-old won’t have to pack again.

“He said he’s going to leave his bags packed until we go again in March,” Schwab said.

The Schwabs Plan B is a stay-cation. They’re going to the Colts game and the Indianapolis Children’s Museum.
