Mike Pence encounters resistance in Virginia

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WISH) – Mike Pence is in Virginia where his support for Donald Trump was met with resistance at one campaign stop Wednesday.

The GOP Vice Presidential candidate spoke about faith and politics at Liberty University, the college founded by evangelist Jerry Falwell.

While addressing a student convocation he got a lukewarm response when he expressed support for Donald Trump. The reaction was much more enthusiastic when he talked about his own positions including his opposition to abortion.

Later, at a more traditional rally, Pence told the crowd why he wants Trump to be the one to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court created by the death of Antonin Scalia.

“The next President of the United States may well not just fill that one vacancy but could well fill as many as two or three vacancies on the Supreme Court,” he said. “The next President could in the next four years set the course and destiny at the Supreme Court for the next generation.”

And when Governor Pence and First Lady Karen Pence stopped to pick up chili at a local diner a Democrat interrupted the order.

“Mr. Pence,” he yelled, “I think Donald Trump is despicable!”

Virginia was considered a battleground state earlier this year but it’s also the home state of Democratic running mate Tim Kaine and Hillary Clinton currently holds an 8 point lead there.
