Residents react after arrests in ASC case

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – American Senior Communities’ residents and their relatives are searching for answers after Wednesday’s arrests.

Loraine Malcolm lives at Beech Grove Meadows, a property run by ASC.

When she moved there two years ago, James Burkhart still ran the company.

“The feller that got all the money, I hope he gets his due,” Malcolm said. “He should end up in jail.”

The FBI feels the same way.

Detectives raided Burkhart’s home and office last year. Malcolm said she’s double-checking her bills to make sure the company never ripped her off.

“It makes me feel like it was kind of an iffy situation but we stayed because it’s hard to move,” she said.

American Senior Communities released a statement praising the U.S. Attorney’s office. The statement reads in part: “ASC was the victim of a betrayal of trust from two of its former officers.”

Nancy Timpe said her 94-year-old mom lives at the ASC-owned American Village.

“I don’t think our seniors are well-taken care of emotionally, physically or financially,” Timpe said. “I think this might be justice for them, at least in the financial sense.”

ASC fired Burkhart just days after the FBI raided his home in 2015.

Company leaders said they’ve come away from the investigation as a stronger organization.
