Holcomb, Scott Walker stand behind Trump

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Republican Eric Holcomb picked up a big endorsement in the race for governor Thursday but he still can’t escape the controversy surrounding Donald Trump.

There is widespread concern among Indiana Republicans that Donald Trump’s lead in Indiana will slip and that, if one-time Trump supporters stay home, it will hurt their chances to be elected.

And so, when Eric Holcomb appeared with Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker at the sort of event that candidates hope for, both of them were quizzed, not on Holcomb’s ideas or the endorsement he was just rewarded, but instead on the level of support they have for Trump.

“I have every intention on supporting the Republican nominee for President, yes,” said Holcomb.

“I said on Friday I thought his actions, or words and actions were unacceptable and inexcusable,” said Gov. Walker. “My position’s the same today.”

The endorsement is from the Indiana Manufacturers Association which represents the largest sector in the Indiana economy, so it’s a big one.

Yet all of the media questions were about Donald Trump.

“I think Hoosiers have a history and long practice of being discerning,” said Holcomb, “and they will evaluate our campaigns independently.”

It’s a problem for every Republican at the moment, one that Democrats hope to exploit.

It’s worth noting that Scott Walker was a candidate for President and so he took a pledge to support the GOP nominee. He doesn’t have much wiggle room.
