Ivy Tech’s new policy protects transgender, gender nonconforming students and faculty from discrimination
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Indiana’s Ivy Tech Community College announced it’s transgender policy Thursday.
According to a release, Ivy Tech will protect transgender and gender nonconforming students and faculty from discrimination.
“Ivy Tech Community College is committed to creating a safe campus environment for transgender and gender non-conforming students,” the policy reads.
The guidelines include:
- Grant transgender and gender nonconforming students the right to express their gender identity openly, or to keep it private;
- Requires all school records to reflect the students gender and name;
- Requires students be addressed by the name and pronouns that correspond to their gender identity;
- Allows students to use the facilities that match their gender identity.
The policy went into effect on July 1.
The college is currently facing a lawsuit for discriminating against a faculty member based on her sexual orientation.
“While we are pleased with the advancements Ivy Tech has made with their transgender policy, there is still room to grow. We hope that they will take every step possible to ensure that no LGBT person is ever discriminated against,” Chris Paulsen, the campaign manager of Freedom Indiana said.
