To many of us, he’s Former Colts Wide Receiver Reggie Wayne and now a current NFL Network Analyst; but to hungry kids across Indiana, he’s so much more. Reggie will join representatives from Gleaners Bank of Indiana and Smithfield Foods Friday to raise awareness of food insecurity in Indiana and discuss the importance of providing assistance to our neighbors in need. Here’s more:
– More than 48 million Americans live in food insecure households, including nearly 13-percent of families in Indiana and one-in-five Hoosier children.
– Smithfield is donating 25,000 pounds, or 100,000 servings, of protein to Gleaners Bank of Indiana as part of its nationwide “Helping Hungry Homes” initiative. Reggie will be unloading the donation truck when it arrives midday on October 14.
– Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana serves 21 counties in central and SE Indiana and last year provided assistance to 260,000 people. More help is always needed in terms of cash, food, and time donations; information can be found at the Gleaners website.
While the unemployment rate has begun to drop and more jobs are created, millions of Americans still struggle with food insecurity. More than 48 million Americans live in food insecure households. Food assistance organizations across the country report that individuals and families are turning to them for assistance.
