Man in Seymour hits fire hydrant, arrested for DUI

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – After striking a fire hydrant a man in Seymour was arrested for driving under the influence.

According to the Columbus Police Department, the incident happened in the 8200 block of South International Drive just before 8 a.m. Tuesday in Columbus.  Police responded to the area in regards to the crash.

When officers arrived on scene, a security guard told officers that the vehicle drove around a line of cars who were waiting to pull into a parking lot. When the 2001 Ford Windstar, driven by 57-year-old Horacio Tamariz, struck the hydrant when attempting to travel off the roadway.

Police said that while talking to Tamariz, he exhibited slurred speech, failed a number of sobriety tests and had trouble with balance. On a certified breath test, Tamariz blew a .186.

Tamariz was taken then taken into custody and transported to the Bartholomew County Jail. He currently faces preliminary charges for operating a vehicle without ever receiving a license, operating a vehicle without proof of financial responsibility,  leaving the scene of a property damage crash and operating while intoxicated with a blood alcohol content of .15 or greater.
