More snow this winter? Winter weather outlook released

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — NOAA has released their winter weather outlook for this upcoming season, and it’s calling for near normal temperatures and above average snowfall for central Indiana.

This is a big change from last winter, where a strong El Nino created mild temperatures and below average snowfall across central Indiana. Forecasts point to a potential weak La Nina this winter, which is cooling waters in the equatorial Pacific ocean.

La Nina conditions typically bring above average snowfall to much of the Great Lakes Region.

Last winter was the 12th warmest winter on record in Indianapolis. The city only received 13.3″ of snowfall for the season, almost half of the average.

Average total snowfall for the year in Indianapolis is 25.9″.
