Make-A-Wish builds ‘fantasy Fenway’ in family’s yard

BOSTON, M.A. (WTEN) – For a young Boston boy, being a Red Sox fan is more than just attending games.

Ten-year-old Thomas Hastings who has muscular dystrophy and scoliosis has gone through dozens of surgeries.

Thomas has thrown out the first pitch at Fenway Park in Boston before and Saturday was opening day of his new ball park.

Thomas made a wish to the Make-A-Wish Foundation to build a replica of Fenway Park in his backyard.

Thomas’ ballpark features the same turf used by the Red Sox, a Green Monster with seating available on top of the wall, a bullpen in right field with retired numbers, a Citgo sign in center field, foul poles and a press box.

The project included removing 70 trees and bringing in more than 240 yards of sand to level the family’s backyard. Dave Mellor, the head groundskeeper at Fenway, also visited and discussed the project with Thomas.
