ISU student dies during fraternity event

DENNISON, Ill. (WTHI) — Authorities are investigating after an Indiana State University student died in a fraternity event in Illinois over the weekend.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to a report of a person who had fallen from a small boat into a pond early Sunday morning.

The office says a 19-year-old male was recovered from the pond.

The office says he was taken to Regional Hospital in Terre Haute where he died.

The male has been identified as Yiorgo Karnezis.

Indiana State University officials confirm Karnezis was a freshman at the university. The school went on to say that he died during an overnight social event for Sigma Chi Fraternity near Marshall, Illinois.

ISU confirms they have suspended all operations of the Sigma Chi Fraternity as protocol while officials investigate.

“The Indiana State University community is deeply saddened by the death of Yiorgo Karnezis. The death of a student affects the entire Sycamore family, and we as a community extend our deepest and sincerest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time,” said Willie L. Banks Jr., Ph.D., vice president for student affairs, in a statement from ISU.
