Vandals break into downtown Indy church

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A downtown Indianapolis church said it won’t be deterred after someone broke in over the weekend.

It happened at Unity Church of Indianapolis.

The pastor noticed the break-in Saturday morning. All they got away with was $25.

“We have people  who will risk a lot simply for $25 dollars,” said David Fromm, who works at the church. “It’s really sad with the state of affairs.”

After breaking in, the vandals were able to get into the pastor’s office where they found an envelope with the money.

The only damage is to the front window.

“The front window was all broke out, landscaping rocks thrown through it,” said Fromm.

The glass is a quarter inch thick and reinforced with wire.

The church has been in the community for more than 40 years. Much of their work revolves around helping the homeless.

“The people we serve is not the people that you could go out and just get help. But a lot of them depend on the lunches and the breakfasts that we do put out,” said Fromm.

After dealing with so much, they said their commitment to the community will not change.

“God is within you and it’s really the attitude that you and how you look at things.  You do the best of what God provides you to do.” said Fromm.

From here they said they’ll likely install a surveillance system.
