Coroner: ISU student died by accidental drowning

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – Officials report the autopsy has been completed for Indiana State University student, Yiorgo Karnezis, who died over the weekend in Illinois.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office reported on Sunday that deputies responded to a report of a person who had fallen from a small boat into a pond . The office says 18-year-old Karnezis was recovered from the pond.

He later died at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

Indiana State University officials confirm Karnezis was a freshman at the university. The school went on to say that he died during an overnight social event for Sigma Chi Fraternity near Marshall, Illinois.

ISU confirms they have suspended all operations of the Sigma Chi Fraternity as protocol while officials investigate.

Autopsy results are consistent with accidental drowning. Officials also report that toxicology results will take two to six weeks.
