Car crashes into BMO bank on Shadeland Ave.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A northeast side bank is closed after an SUV slammed into it with several people inside the building. IFD says it was an accident.

The crash happened at the BMO bank in the 7600 block of North Shadeland Avenue.

The doors were open but it wasn’t the warm welcome you’d expect. Shards of glass spread across the entrance. Bent doors off of their hinges lined the sidewalk and yellow caution tape blocked off the perimeter. All are signs that something bad happened.

“I just pulled up and was like hmmm, yellow tape? What’s going on,” said BMO Harris customer, Audrey Howard.

Dave Fuss added, “I was going to do a deposit at the bank but I guess I’ll have to find a different bank.”

According to IFD, a 74-year old woman was trying to park when she stepped on the gas instead of the breaks. She smashed into the branch.

“I’m glad I wasn’t in the bank at the counter when that came through the door,” said Fuss.

The vehicle landed on a desk. Seconds before, an employee was working at that same desk. Eight workers and two customers were inside. None were injured including the woman.

“That’s a good thing that nobody got injured. I hope the lady is alright. I know she’s probably in a scare,” said Howard.

IFD sent crews to inspect the structural integrity of the building. BMO posted signs letting customers know the branch is temporarily closed. A reopen date hasn’t been set, but BMO says it will open as soon as possible.
