12-year-old crashes car after trying to elude police in Texas

AUSTIN (KXAN) – A preteen is in the hospital after police say he crashed a car while trying to get away from an officer Monday morning.

Austin police say around 7:35 a.m., an officer in the 900 block of Springdale Road saw a driver weaving in and out of traffic.

“He initially thought it was someone distracted but once he saw the driver going over the line, he thought the person was impaired,” explained Officer Ivan Ramos with the Austin Police Department. The officer tried to pull the 12-year-old driver over but he took off instead.

The driver continued southbound on Springdale Road, turned onto East Seventh Street and then onto South Pleasant Valley Road. As the officer was following him, the suspect hit another driver but that didn’t slow him down.

The driver ended up crashing into a utility pole a short time later at the corner of South Pleasant Valley Road and East Riverside Drive. The child was taken to Dell Children’s Medical Center for treatment but authorities expect him to be okay.

They expect to charge the juvenile with driving while intoxicated, failure to stop and render aid and evading arrest.
