Bicyclist killed in Fort Wayne hit-and-run; police search for 2 vehicles

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) A bicyclist was struck and killed by a vehicle Monday night as he rode along a roadway just northwest of Fort Wayne.

Police and medics were called just before 8 p.m. Monday to the 5000 block of Hand Road, near West Dupont Road and Fritz Road, on a report of a personal injury crash. There, responders found a man dead, according to the Allen County Sheriff’s Department.

An autopsy performed Tuesday by the Allen County Coroner’s Office determined that Nicholas James Mruk, 24, of Huntertown died from blunt force trauma due to being struck by a vehicle.

Investigators said Mruk had been riding his bicycle on Hand Road when he was struck by a vehicle. The vehicle then drove off, the sheriff’s department said in a Tuesday release.

Witnesses told police that a second vehicle then pulled up and picked up the bicycle before it, too, drove off. Witnesses said that vehicle was possibly a dark-colored minivan.

A description of the first vehicle was not provided. Police released no other information.
