Muncie police chief resigns, effective immediately

MUNCIE, Ind. (WISH) — The Muncie Police Chief, Steve Stewart has resigned, effective immediately.

According to Mayor Dennis Tyler, he resigned Monday.

His replacement has not been selected.

Below is the Mayor’s full statement:

Chief Stewart chose to resign effective immediately as Chief of Police Monday, October 31. I have accepted his resignation. My administration will begin the process of selecting a replacement as quickly as possible. I appreciate Steve’s service as Chief. City of Muncie is blessed with a great group of men and women who serve our Community as police officers. They will continue to serve and protect with pride and professionalism.”

It is unclear why Stewart decided to step away. This story will be updated when more information becomes available.
