IMPD awarding officers for a job well done

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department awarded officers for a job well done.

The IMPD Honor Awards Ceremony took place Thursday morning at Clowes Auditorium.

Officers received awards and medals for bravery, valor, merit and more.

24-Hour News 8’s Julian Grace hosted the event. The ceremony started at 11 a.m.

Officers Nathan Challis received a Medal of Bravery. In August, Challis responded to a residential fire. Once on the scene the flames had taken over a portion of the home.

Three adults ran outside of the house, and in the process a woman told Challis a baby was still inside. Without much of a thought, Challis rushed inside and saved the baby.

“I do it to help people, it feels good when you do things like that even if people don’t know who you are,” said Challis.

In the aftermath, fire investigators determined if Challis didn’t think quickly the baby would not have survived.

Officer Javed Richards was recognized during the program. Richards used a tourniquet to save a woman’s life. The woman was losing massive amounts of blood in the aftermath of a car accident.

If Richards didn’t apply the tourniquet, the woman could of died from her injures.

In the mist of the program various residents were honored, including a group of people who helped police discover evidence in a landfill. The evidence was tied to the murder investigation of baby Janna.

Janna’s father, Jeffery Fairbanks, was later arrested and charged with his daughter’s murder.
