Young aims to beat a household name in Indiana Senate race

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Indiana voters will play a key role in determining which party wins control of the U.S. Senate as they decide between Democrat Evan Bayh and Republican Todd Young.

Bayh has never lost an election dating back to 1986 and comes from a family that has been active in Indiana politics for decades.

But a barrage of attack ads have tarnished the moderate image Bayh built over his time as Indiana’s governor and 12 years in the Senate.

Outside groups poured nearly $40 million into a mostly negative characterizing Bayh as someone who left the Senate six years ago for lucrative corporate jobs.

The lesser-known Young is a six-year congressman from southern Indiana who has benefited from the attacks on Bayh, as Republicans seek to retain their narrow Senate majority.
