Johnson Co. couple falls victim to Craigslist house rental scam

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – Justin Massey and his fiance, Dusti Robinson were scrolling through Craigslist looking for a place to stay.

Soon enough they came across a property that caught their eye.  It was a house with a big back yard that would be perfect for their 3-year-old and two rambunctious dogs.

Interested in the house, Massey and Robinson called the people they thought were the owners and agreed to meet.

Robinson said the people had keys to the house, they then walked in and were given a tour complete with details on what and how everything worked.

After their tour, Massey and Robinson were convinced and decided to rent. Keys were exchanged, a lease was signed and $1,800 was handed over to the so-called owners of the home.

However, about a week later the couple said the real owners confronted them. After a brief conversation with the actual homeowners, the couple called the police, but the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said they did not have any leads on suspects.

Fortunately, the real homeowners, who are trying to sell the house, are allowing Massey and Robinson’s family stay for the time being.
