2 dead after crash involving Lawrence police officer

LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) — An 87-year-old woman and 86-year-old man have died following a crash involving a Lawrence police officer. The woman, Selma Elling was the passenger of the vehicle driven by her husband, Norman Elling.

This happened near Pendleton Pike near Mitthoeffer Road.

The crash involved an officer, 15 year veteran Johnathan Clark and his K-9, who are both are okay after sustaining minor injuries.

According to police, the officer was heading in the east bound lanes of Pendleton Pike responding to a shoplifting call. Police say the officer did not have on his lights and sirens, and it is under investigation how fast he may have been traveling.

“As far as all of the contributing circumstances, our crash team is investigating all of the contributing circumstances of that crash,” said Lawrence Chief Deputy, Gary Woodruff.

The senior couple was in the westbound lanes of Pendleton Pike turning onto South Mitthoeffer, when the crash happened.

Lawrence police said both drivers will have their blood drawn to test for alcohol. Police said right now it doesn’t appear that alcohol may have been a factor.

The crash circumstances are currently ongoing.
