GM plant in Kokomo to layoff approximately 160

KOKOMO, Ind. (WISH) – The General Motors plant in Kokomo plant will layoff approximately 160 people.

According to a release from the company, employees were notified of the move that will affect about 100 hourly and 60 salary workers on Nov. 9.

The job loss is due to the plant’s decision to halt semiconductor production by mid-2017.

The company said the decision to wind down and then eventually stop production of the semiconductor was based on a number of factors including saying that the current production volume of the semiconductor is not profitable and the cost to invest money into new equipment to produce the semiconductors given the ability of suppliers to meet the existing semiconductor demand.

Following the layoffs, approximately 600 jobs are expected to remain at the Kokomo plant.

Additionally, the company said in the coming months they will be working to help identify other job opportunities for salaried employees affected by the move.
