Parents, 7-year-old boy charged after child shoots father

GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) — A pair of Greenwood parents and their seven-year-old son have been charged after investigators say the boy shot the father.

Charles Yancey III and Ruby Yancey face neglect of a dependent charges in the case, a level six felony. Their son has been charged with criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, a level six felony if he was to be charged as an adult.

According to investigators, Charles and his son got into an argument on Nov. 13. The son got ahold of an unsecured handgun and ammo, then shot his father in the wrist.

Court documents state that the boy was upset that he was going to have to spend the weekend with his father.

The gun belonged to Ruby Yancey. Investigators said it suffered a “double feed malfunction,” keeping it from firing more than once. She told investigators that the gun had been stored in unsecured in a dresser.

Police described the condition of the residence as “deplorable,” with the floor being covered with clothes and trash. Police said the floor itself was not visible.

Court documents also state that the Greenwood Police Department took a report on Nov. 11 when the boy allegedly took a stungun from his mother’s dresser but threw it away when it didn’t work.
