INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A banquet was held in downtown Indianapolis Friday evening to pay tribute to Indiana’s 2017 “Teacher of the Year.”

The award-winning educator, Jitka Nelson, teaches high school English language arts and developmental reading at Logansport Community Schools.

Nelson has been an educator for 25 years and has taught at Logansport Community High School since 2006.

Nelson said her students were initially unhappy after learning she had won the award because they would not be able to meet with her the day of the banquet.

She has also taught in the Czech Republic and Canada.

24-Hour News 8’s Nina Criscuolo served as emcee of the event.
