Mass. Ave. shops staying open until midnight Friday for holiday shopping
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – If you hate Black Friday and want to help out the local economy, an event in downtown Indy will give you the opportunity to do just that.
There are 20 local businesses on Massachusetts Avenue that will stay open until midnight Friday for holiday shopping. Put on by the Mass. Ave. Merchants Association, the event started years ago as a fun alternative to early morning big-box store shopping the morning after Thanksgiving.
Research shows that if you shift your spending from national chains and online to locally-owned businesses, you can have a dramatic effect on your local economy.
For every $100 spent at a locally-owned business, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures — compared to only $43 from a national chain.
