Despite headaches, travelers remember reason for Thanksgiving

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Thanksgiving 2016 is here but before dinner can be served, guests have to get there.

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is traditionally one of the busiest travel days of the year.

AAA says more people will travel this Thanksgiving than in nearly a decade.

At Indianapolis International Airport, travelers were mostly going to see family.

“Orlando, Florida. Go see grandma and grandpa,” said Brad Smulyan, while checking in with his wife and son.

“We are headed to Los Angeles today,” said Angela Dilts, traveling with her daughter.

Others were traveling to Indianapolis.

“My mother, my nieces, my sister stay here so, be able to come visit them is always good,” said Ron Davis while waiting for a car with his wife and son.

Some 14,000 travelers moved through IND Wednesday.

AAA says another one million Hoosiers will drive to have dinner with family.

Both figures are up from last year.

“Our families are scattered, so it’s important,” said Leslie Smulyan.

Despite the frustrations of travel, people say they’re keeping in mind what this holiday is all about.

“Family,” said Ed Lee who is visiting his daughter. “Just stopping to remember you know how thankful you should be for what you have, how blessed we all are to live in this country. Always to remember somebody else always has it worse, so there’s a lot to be thankful for.”
