Central Indiana county restoring hacked computer system

ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) – Workers have spent weeks restoring the computer files of a central Indiana county government that was hacked by an unknown group that demanded a ransom payment.

Madison County officials decided to pay the ransom following the Nov. 4 hacking that locked up county computers. Officials then received decryption keys to unlock the files.

County information technology director Lisa Cannon tells The (Anderson) Herald Bulletin  that staffers have worked many hours of overtime restoring links between the computer software and county files that were broken in the hacking attack.

Cannon says her department is adding more computer security but believed it previously had up-to-date protections.

Officials are negotiating with the county’s cyber insurance carrier on covering some of the costs.
