Australia Zoo welcomes 3 baby puggles

SYDNEY (WISH) – The Taronga Zoo in Sydney Australia welcomed three new member to their family. They welcomed three baby puggles earlier this month.

The three echidna puggles are nearly 30 years in the making, according to the zoo’s press release. They say that the animals are particularly hard to breed in human care. But keepers are pleased with with the trio. The first time mothers, Ganyi, Spike and Pitpa are also doing well.

Echidnas are one of only two Australian mammals that lay eggs. The puggles hatched after 10 days and were carried around by its mother in a pouch-like skin for two months.

The zoo said all three puggles hatched within a short period in August. Currently the puggles spend their days in burrow.

Keepers say they won’t name or know the puggles sexes until they come outside their burrows early next year.
