Ivy Tech works to protect student body

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Ivy Tech’s Fall Creek campus is about 175 miles away from Columbus, Ohio. The distance in mileage closed significantly when students learned nine people were injured on the campus of Ohio State University. This after a man slammed his car into the sidewalk and jumped out and stabbed several people with a butcher knife.

The suspect was later shot and killed by a campus police officer.

“We need to be safe at all times especially at school,” said Ivy Tech student Daniel Quiroga.

Ivy Tech has a list of security procedures in case of an active shooter situation. The school has security, police officers, and surveillance video on hand to help students. Ivy Tech works to identify students that may have some type of behavioral issues, once identified the students receive help and possible resources that are available.

“We have measures in place, we have lock down drills a couple of times a year,” said Rob Carter, who runs Ivy Tech’s Risk Management Department. Carter tells 24-Hour News 8 it is important to get students to speak up if they see or hear something suspicious. A timely phone call could help in addressing a possibly dangerous situation.
