Person hit, killed on I-465 on Indy’s northeast side

1 person dead in crash on northeast side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — One person died Monday after being hit by a vehicle on the northeast side of Indianapolis, Indiana State Police confirmed.

Medics and Indiana State Police were called around 5:10 a.m. to a report of a person hit on the ramp from westbound I-465 to Allisonville Road.

Indiana State Police say a semitrailer was headed west on I-465 approaching the Allisonville Road exit when its right front wheel and tire detached.

The truck driver pulled off into an area between the ramp lane and the main line. The wheel was approximately 30 yards behind the semitrailer in the right lane.

“A westbound vehicle struck the wheel, causing the wheel to become lodged under the car. The vehicle then struck the driver of the semi who was standing outside near the front right side of the semi-tractor,” ISP Sgt. John Perrine said in a release.

The truck driver was rushed to a local hospital but did not survive.

The driver of the car was transported to an Indianapolis-area hospital with minor injuries.

State police do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

The westbound I-465 ramp to Allisonville Road was closed for nearly three hours for investigation and cleanup. It reopened just before 9 a.m.

The identity of the deceased driver is being withheld to allow time for family notifications.
