Greenwood family finds racist graffiti on side of home

GREENWOOD (WISH) – Greenwood police are investigating after a racial slur was found spray painted on the side of a home. It happened sometime late Monday night or early Tuesday morning at a home on Blue Grass Parkway. That’s near U.S. 31 and East Stop 18 Road.

“You never think that you will be having this conversation with your children in 2016,” said the woman who lives at the home. She is a mother of four.

“You can’t prepare yourself for a conversation like this with your kids,” said the mother.

The woman asked not to be identified, but said this is just the latest in a series of hateful messages.

The family has also received three threatening letters. They also have racial slurs on them and lines like, “you are not wanted around here,” “white power,” and “Trump country.”

The mother said the safety of her family is a top priority and she’s worried about the hate escalating to violence.

“You never know what the next thing is going to be. You get letters, you get graffiti, so the next thing you know… you think is the next thing going to be a cocktail through my window to burn my house all the way down?” she said.

She told 24-Hour News 8 if the messages don’t stop soon she may be forced to move from her home.

“My kids are scared to death,” she said.

Greenwood Police say they have a detective assigned to this case. Officers will be stepping up patrols in the area. Police are also working to notify the FBI who may get involved in the investigation if this is determined to be a hate crime.
