Indianapolis man charged with stealing $300,000 in tax funds from company

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An Indianapolis man has been charged with 16 felonies after allegedly stealing more than $300,000 in client funds intended to pay taxes.

Roscoe Fields’ company, Balance Bookkeeping and Tax Services, was hired in 2009 to handle payroll and tax payments for Biblical Dogs, Inc., according to a probable cause affidavit.

While overseeing tax deposits to the Internal Revenue Services and Department of Revenue on behalf of the company, he wrote himself checks and changed the business address without authorization, the documents state. Charging documents say the incidents happened between December 2011 and January 2013.

Biblical Dogs owner Joyce Carter said she became aware of the issue when the IRS and Department of Revenue seized funds from her personal bank account, court documents state.

Fields is charged with corrupt business influence, theft and 14 counts of forgery — all class C felonies. In all, prosecutors say he and his wife pocketed $302,601.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 24.
