Family dog pulled out of rubble alive 2 days after fatal house fire

BRAZIL, Ind. (WISH) – A family dog was pulled out of the rubble alive, two days after the fatal house fire in Brazil.

It was a shock when firefighters pulled the dog out after three people died in the fire just days earlier.

On Monday, four-month-old Zoiey Alaweigh Jane Tedder, four-year-old Shyloi Leeland Dale Stewart, and 18-year-old Raven Elizabeth Rose Tedder all died in the house fire.

Shyloi was Raven’s little brother and the four-month old, Zoiey, was Raven Tedder’s daughter. The coroner’s office said all died of carbon monoxide intoxication and smoke inhalation.

A fourth person, a four-year-old boy, was transferred to Union Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

At least 11 people were living in the house, according to the Brazil Fire Department chief.

The Red Cross has assisted the family in finding a place to stay.

Firefighters fought the blaze until almost 1:30 Tuesday morning.

Investigators returned Wednesday morning at 9 to continue their investigation. Arson investigators with the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s office were also there.

They tore down the front portion of the house in order to determine the cause of the fire. They say a cause for the fire is still under investigation

Meanwhile the community is coming together to help the family.

“As a small community I think that, especially during a crisis, we all just kind of bond together make things happen,” said Jenni Chamberlain, the founder of Serving on the Streets, a local civic organization.

Wednesday S.O.S. began collecting supplies and gifts for the Stewart family.

“Just a time to come together as a community to just support them and support one another and fill these empty spots right now,” said Chamberlain.

As the mourning continues, so do the acts of kindness. Wednesday morning when temperatures were just above freezing James Trefz brought coffee for the investigators.

“(It’s the) right thing to do, they’re outside in the cold after something like this happened. At least they can get a little warm,” said Trefz.
