IN lawmaker introduces bill that requires DNA to be collected from those arrested for felony

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – An Indiana lawmaker has introduced a bill that would require authorities to collect DNA form every person arrested for a felony.

State Senator Erin Houchin unveiled the first draft of the bill on Tuesday.

The bill would require every person arrested after June 30 of 2017 to submit a DNA sample. Those samples from people who are later acquitted of felonies would be removed from the registry.

More than 30 states currently have laws that authorize the analysis of DNA samples from individuals arrested or charged of certain crimes.

The Indiana General Assembly will discuss the proposed bill on January 3.
