Woman leaves free art where racist graffiti was found

BLOOMINGTON (WISH) – An artist is fighting back against racist graffiti by spreading positive messages through art.

Sidney Bolam is a local stone carver. She is creating pieces of art and leaving them in the same areas hit by that graffiti.

On Wednesday,  24-Hour News 8 followed her down the B-Line Trail in Bloomington. She left art in the area where someone spray painted swastikas and KKK back in November.

“People are afraid, they are sad…it is just kind of hurtful. It is sad these are places where we all hang out,” said Bolam.

She’s hoping this reminds people there is still good in the community.

“If there are problems in your community or things that make you feel scared or uncertain you have to remember that most people really are good and that most people are watching out for you,” said Bolam.

She left the artwork with a note that explains what her “art drop” project is. The note said, “if this piece speaks to you keep it or give it to a friend. I only ask that you keep the random acts of kindness going.”

She hopes it inspires someone to do for others.

Bolam has also left art outside of a church in Bean Blossom vandalized with similar messages.
