IFD battles 2-alarm fire on south side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire on the south side of Indianapolis Thursday morning. This is the fourth time in 18 days that the Indianapolis Fire Department has responded to a two-alarm fire.

Crews were called to a vacant warehouse at Sumner Avenue and Shelby Street just after 8 a.m. Initial calls reported said there was possibly someone inside the building. Luckily that report was not founded.

Heavy black smoke could be seen billowing from the building. Crews struggled to put out the flames in the extreme temperatures and the building’s construction with heavy timber inside and holes in the stairwells.

The building is made up of five different warehouses, all had heavy fire in them.

Firefighters had the fire under control in about an hour and 45 minutes. No one was hurt.

Additional crews were called in to rotate out firefighters as they put out the fire.

Neighbors told IFD that they’ve noticed squatters in and out of the warehouse, but it had not been reported to IMPD.

Anyone who notices unusual activity at a vacant structure should report the activity to IMPD by calling 911 or your IMPD District Officer.
